My Island at Heart: Discover It Differently, Through Traditions, Flavors, and Respect

🌴 Saint-Barth, My Island at Heart: Discover It Differently, Through Traditions, Flavors, and Respect

I was born and raised in Saint-Barthélemy. Here, every sunset, every trail, every hidden beach tells me a story. Of course, people know my island for its luxury, stunning villas, and turquoise waters. But Saint-Barth is also a land of traditions, craftsmanship, and local initiatives—and that’s the side I want to share with you.

Today, I invite you to explore my island through my eyes: by supporting local businesses, tasting authentic Creole cuisine, meeting passionate artisans, and taking part in preserving this paradise.

đźš— Renting Local Means Supporting Local People

When visiting Saint-Barth, having a car is essential for getting around freely. But instead of using big international chains, I recommend two trusted local companies:

Dollar SBH: A hidden gem for travelers on a budget. Well-maintained, affordable cars and, most importantly, warm, responsive, and human service. They deliver directly to the airport, your hotel, or your villa—zero stress, everything is smooth and simple.
👉 Check out Dollar SBH

HC Rental: If you’re looking for a more upscale experience, HC Rental offers luxury vehicles with a strong local touch. Personalized delivery and impeccable service included.

By choosing either one, you’re supporting the local economy—and traveling with a smile.

🍽️ Tasting Saint-Barth Is Diving into Real Creole Life

There’s no better way to discover the soul of a place than through its food. Here are a few of my personal favorites:

Grain de Sel in Corossol: A local institution. Authentic Creole cuisine, family atmosphere, grilled fish… the true flavor of the island.

Le Ptit Coral in Gustavia: A lovely surprise. Dishes that blend Caribbean tradition with a French twist. Simple, tasty, and generous.

Le Diamant in Saint-Jean: A hidden gem with refined cuisine, fresh ingredients, and a passionate chef. Perfect for a peaceful evening.

La Langouste at Baie des Anges Hotel: Here, the sea is literally on your plate. Try the local lobster, grilled or in a fricassée—it’s pure delight.

🎨 Craftsmanship Reborn: Palm Weaving

When I was a child, my grandmother taught me how to weave latanier leaves. This tradition nearly disappeared, but thanks to some great initiatives, it’s coming back.

📍 “Les Ateliers Paille”, organized by the local community, are free and open to all. The first session, held at the territorial library, was a huge success! You can learn to weave stars, fish, or birds—it’s a chance to reconnect with an ancient craft while sharing a fun and social moment. I hope you’ll try it during your next visit!

🎭 Music, Books, and Celebrations: A Culture That Thrives Year-Round

🎼 Saint-Barth Music Festival
In January, our island hosts one of the most beautiful classical music festivals in the Caribbean. Magical venues, international artists, unforgettable moments… A must for music lovers.

🎷 Saint-Barth Jazz Festival
A more relaxed vibe, but just as vibrant! Jazz, funk, soul—playing in the streets, bars, and on the beaches. The whole island becomes a giant live stage. You dance, you dream, you connect.

📚 Book & Island Literatures Festival
One of my favorites. It highlights island authors and those who write about the islands. There are readings, signings, children’s workshops… A wonderful way to experience our culture differently.

🎉 Carnival: The Heartbeat of the Island

Every year, during Carnival, the island comes alive with color, music, and joy. It’s a time I always look forward to. Handmade costumes, drums in the streets, smiles everywhere… It’s a celebration of our identity and a tribute to our roots.

🌿 Let’s Protect Our Island Together

Saint-Barth is precious—and everyone can help protect it. Here are three associations I support and encourage you to check out:

Coral Restoration – Working to replant coral reefs and save our marine life.
St-Barth Essentiel – Teaching about our biodiversity through walks and workshops.
Clean St-Barth – Organizing cleanup days on beaches and hiking trails.

It’s simple, meaningful, and feels great to take part.

đź’› In Summary: Come Experience the Real Saint-Barth

As a local, I truly believe in traveling differently. By renting from Dollar SBH or HC Rental, dining at Grain de Sel, Le Diamant, or La Langouste, joining a weaving workshop, or getting involved with a local association—you’ll discover another side of Saint-Barth.

More authentic. More human. More alive.

So if you’re ever on the island, come say hi—and let your heart soak in the real Saint-Barth.
